How we design

We call it Layered Play.

Children don't play in just one way. They move, imagine, create, retreat, and begin again.

Layered Play is our approach to designing spaces that support different kinds of play within the same environment — often within the very same elements.

  1. Move

Climb. Swing. Hang. Balance. Jump. Crash.

Climbing walls, monkey bars, swings, ropes, platforms and places to land give growing bodies opportunities for movement, challenge and sensory input.

  2. Imagine

    Pretend. Hide. Invent. Make believe.

Platforms become castles. Nooks become hideaways. Curtains, stages, puppet spaces and open-ended elements leave room for children to create worlds of their own.

  3. Create

    Draw. Build. Make. Experiment.

Art walls, drawing surfaces, building areas, tables and accessible materials give children places to follow an idea and make something of their own.

  4. Regulate

    Read. Retreat. Rest. Reset.

Reading nooks, cozy corners, swings, enclosed spaces and softer sensory experiences give children places to slow down, retreat and find what they need.

More ways to play. In the same space.

The layers are designed to overlap. A platform can be climbed on and turn into a reading perch, a stage, a fort, a mountain or a cave. A swing can invite big movement or a quiet reset.

Designed for the child we meet today, with room for who they'll grow into tomorrow.

How it works

From our first hello to their first climb.

Every Little Space starts the same way: with your child, your home and a thoughtful plan for bringing the two together.

  1. Discover

We get to know your child, your space and how your family lives, plays and moves through it.

  2. Design

We turn what we learn into a thoughtful design — layering movement, imagination, creativity and calm around your child and your home.

  3. Build

    the fun part!

Time to bring it to life. Build from our plans with your own team, or let Little Spaces manage every detail from sourcing through installation.

  4. Play

The best part. A space made for climbing, creating, imagining — and whatever they dream up next.

Projects

Every room
has a story.

What's the difference between E-Design and Full-Service?

With E-Design, we create your custom design and everything your builder needs — you bring it to life. With Full-Service, we design, source, coordinate and install it all for you in the Austin area.

How much does a Little Space cost?

E-Design starts at $3,200. Full-Service Design + Install projects start at $8,500. Every space is custom, so we'll talk through a realistic range on your intro call.

How long does it take?

[E-Design: about 0–0 weeks from intro call to your design package. Full-Service: about 0–0 weeks from first visit to first climb.]

Is it safe, and how is it installed?

[Anchoring, load ratings, matting, finishes and insurance — in plain words.]

Will it still work as my child grows?

Yes — that's the point. We design for today and what's next: [adjustable holds, swappable swings, zones that become a reading corner or study nook].

The children bring the energy.
We make room for it.
